[Kaohsiung, Taiwan] - 興隆居/Xīnglóng jū

I found my go-to breakfast spot in Kaohsiung! 興隆居 is actually a local favorite and is known for their soup buns. I am a huge fan of meat buns in the morning when I am in Taiwan, so I was definitely interested in trying some soup buns. It's located pretty close to the City Council KMRT station. It's also right next to another bigger breakfast place. I haven't given that place a try, but I have seen a good amount of people eating there, and wonder if it's just people who don't feel like waiting in line for 興隆.

There are two lines. One is for if you want the soup buns, and one for their general breakfast items. Sometimes both lines are incredibly long, and sometimes it's just one line that is long. I always go for the soup bun line. Don't worry, if you get the soup buns, you can still get the regular breakfast items. You just can't get the soup buns if you only wait in the regular breakfast line. If you can't read Chinese, the regular line is on the right, and the soup bun line is on the left.

Pretty much everything is good, but the buns are stellar. If it's your first time, definitely get the buns along with whatever strikes your fancy. There are tables on the first floor and the second floor, but space is limited and depending on what time you go, you might have to wait for a table. The other option is to take it to go and eat it somewhere else. I will probably do that next time, as the upstairs feels like I'm in a cave.

Soup buns/湯包 - what they are known for. Fluffy white buns with a pork and veggie filling. Watch out for the soup! It's hot but delicious!

Hot and fresh, the breading is so light and fluffy. Just slightly sweet and encases a good amount of pork filling and soup.

Get all the things! 燒餅/shaobing with egg and an oily stick, onion bread, buns, and baos galore!

Meat bun/肉包 - not to be confused with their soup buns. Good, but not as good as their soup buns!

Their sweet soy milk is very good here.

In the kitchen, they are constantly working.

Simple menu but basically you just grab what you want and put it on your tray. At the end of the line there are a few women who tell you how much you owe and it's where you can also get some soy milk.

They keep making it fresh throughout their open hours.

Every trip I have made out here to 興隆居, there has been a very long line. Note that there are two lines - one for if you want their soup buns, and one for if you just want breakfast.
