[Seattle, WA] - Shanghai Garden
There are a few places in Seattle that are often overlooked but hold a special place in my heart. I think too many people forget that food doesn't necessarily just need to taste good to be considered "good"--it can also have a lot to do with memories. Shanghai Garden is one of those places.
I normally like places with fewer things on their menu as it means they focus just on the things they do well instead of spreading themselves thin to try and make everything, but Shanghai Garden has a decently sized menu. That said, I think it's fair to say that there are things that I wouldn't go there for (I'm talking to the yelpers who complained about their Mongolian Beef and General Tso's Chicken not being authentic, you guys just need to go to Panda Express and chill). Shanghai Garden is primarily known for their barley green hand shaven noodles (and not what the girl on yelp referred to as "hand pulled noodles"). They serve them either as stir fried noodles (their chow mein) or soup noodles. If you go on a slower day, you can see them preparing the barley for the noodles, or plucking off the hard bits of the pea sprouts. You can also order the potstickers made from barley green also, which is what we did.
I suggest getting the barley green hand shaven noodles. While their plain noodles come in a hand shaven variety also, it's the barley green ones that are really good. And don't worry kids, it doesn't taste like "vegetables." It's stir fried with whichever type meat you choose, some eggs, and some carrots for color. The noodle texture is very Q. It tastes good plain, or with the chili that they have on the table. It is a bit pricey, but these noodles are hand made and the real estate in that area has gone up a lot in the past twenty years. Some things are just worth it.
Spicy tendon appetizer.
Barley green hand shaven noodles - one is with chicken, the other is with beef. At the bottom - barley green pot stickers.
